Disaster Headlines Create Opportunities for Client Education

Disaster Headlines Create Opportunities for Client Education

I decided to write my blog on educating clients on coverage because no matter what part of the country you live in, it seems we wake up every morning to yesterday’s disaster. A couple of weeks ago, there were floods north of St. Louis in an area that had never been flooded and was no longer in a flood zone. Then there were tsunami warnings for Hawaii and the West Coast. I imagine these insureds are wondering, “Do I have coverage?” I am also sure agents wonder, “Did I offer coverage, and is the file documented?”

When news of natural disasters dominates the media, it often sparks concern and curiosity among our clients. Questions quickly arise regarding insurance coverage and claims processes. Rather than shying away from these challenging conversations, we can use this heightened awareness to educate our clients. This is not about us being involved in the claims process; that is the adjustor’s job. This is about helping our clients understand what coverages they have and, more importantly, what they do not have.

How many times have you heard:

  • “I thought that was covered.”
  • “I didn’t know there was a percentage deductible.”
  • “What do you mean I no longer have replacement cost?”
  • “I didn’t know that coverage was available.”

We immediately go to “Did we discuss that?” and “Is their documentation in the files memorializing these conversations?”

By providing clients with clear explanations, we can turn uncertainties into opportunities. Clients appreciate guidance that addresses their immediate fears but also assists them in understanding the broader landscape of protection and preparedness. Our job is to demystify complex policy details and help clients make choices that align with their unique situations. Clients look to us for clarity amid the noise of sensational headlines. Taking time to walk through what is and isn’t covered, reviewing policy options, and providing specific examples not only alleviates confusion but can also reveal gaps in coverage that might otherwise go unnoticed.

These moments present an ideal opportunity for agencies to address immediate concerns and offer insights into risk management, portfolio diversification, and the importance of understanding. By proactively sharing relevant information and answering questions, agencies can help clients distinguish between fleeting headlines, strengthen trust, and foster informed decision-making.

Our industry is changing. Parametric insurance and the concentric client models are becoming a bigger part of our sales process. The industry is moving away from a universal approach and is instead focusing on developing customized experiences for clients by designing policies and services around their specific requirements. Clients will be more involved in the purchase of coverage and will be the final decision-makers. It is important to recognize that every client’s understanding and needs are as varied as the disasters that capture the headlines. By inviting clients to revisit their coverage when news is fresh in their minds, we foster a sense of control and preparedness rather than anxiety. Sharing stories about real scenarios helps make abstract risks tangible, prompting clients to ask better questions and make decisions rooted in a deeper understanding.

Ultimately, in the wake of disasters, our role expands beyond that of insurance advisor; we become trusted guides through complexity and uncertainty. Each conversation, prompted by sensational headlines, is a chance to reinforce the value of thoughtful planning and demonstrate the enduring support we offer, rain or shine.
